Ricky Brabec wins Dakar 2020

Some exclusive quotes from Ricky Brabec – on his victory at Dakar 2020. With the result, Ricky Brabec becomes the first ever American rider to win the Dakar Rally. The rally covered approximately 5000 kilometres of timed special stages and a total distance of 7800 kilometres; and was the first ever edition of the event in Saudi Arabia.
Describe your emotions at this time…
Ricky Brabec: “Right now it hasn’t really sunk in yet; it feels like I’m still on a stage racing! It’s so satisfying to see all the hard work and teamwork pay off. We got it together for America and for Honda. I couldn’t have done it without all of the support from everyone involved especially Honda, Monster Energy, and AlpineStars.”
Where does this rank alongside other victories in your career?
Ricky Brabec: “This is the pinnacle of victories in my career in any form of motorsport racing. The Dakar is gruelling, it covers more ground than any other race in the world and it feels really nice to wrap this thing up. It’s been 12 days of a lot of kilometres, a lot of desert, cold mornings, hot days and we’ve also had rain. It just feels so good to make this happen.”
What have been the highlights for you of the new Dakar in Saudi Arabia
Ricky Brabec: “It’s been an incredible two weeks out here, but for sure the win has been the highlight. We’ve had some really good days along the way. The route, the terrain, the competition – it’s all been an amazing experience. Everyone has bad days, but that’s rally; and this event is too long for anyone to have a truly perfect race. But to wrap it up with the win – of course doing it on the Dakar’s first event in Saudi – it’s all been pretty incredible.”
Finally, a quick word about your team and support, and where to next…
Ricky Brabec: “Everyone has just worked so well together. We’ve got a new manager in the team this year, and in the last two weeks everyone has just been getting along. First and foremost we’ve got to the end of the event all safe which is a really positive thing; and I really hope we can keep this momentum and good feeling going for the next year into Dakar 2021. I want to come back and repeat it, I’m not going to slow down. I love riding dirt bikes and motorcycles. We accomplished this goal and it just needs to sink in. I think for another American to win is going to be some time at least. I just aim to accomplish as much as I can in my career and this is definitely the biggest so far.Just to win the Dakar, I think you have to dedicate yourself entirely to Dakar, and I’m so happy to have finally pulled it off.”
