With another win in the second 450 Class moto at Miller Motorsports Park, Trey Canard has completed a 1-1 sweep of the Utah National and recorded the first overall win of his 450 Class career.
Canard also has now won the second moto at each of the last three rounds and has taken the checkered flag in four of the last five motos raced – an amazing streak considering that he had never won a 450 Class moto before it began.
This was also an important moto for Ken Roczen, who cruised to a fourth-place finish and officially won the 450 Class championship.
Canard grabbed the MotoSport.com Holeshot, but Roczen quickly moved up from fifth to second and began applying the pressure to the leader. Canard held him off though and soon opened up a slight margin between him and Roczen. From there, Roczen seemed to ride conservatively, knowing that he would lock up the championship as long as he could avoid any major disasters.
Dungey passed Roczen on Lap 6 to take over second, then Eli Tomac moved past Roczen four laps later to take over third. Roczen was able to ride his own race all alone in fourth place and easily earn the championship.
Up front, Dungey was never able to cut Canard’s lead to under two seconds and would settle for second place. Dungey will end the season 14 points behind Roczen in the title race.
The leaders were fast once again in this moto, as Canard lapped the field all the way through ninth place.
A huge crash right off the start of the moto collected Fredrik Noren, Andrew Short, Chad Reed and Johnny Moore. All four riders were taking off from the left side of the starting gate and ended up going off the track and down the hill. Noren stormed back through the field and charged all the way up to ninth place by the end of the race – reminiscent of his second moto last week at Indiana when he had trouble getting his bike started at the beginning of the race and then went from last place to eighth place. With the result today in Utah, Noren locked up a top ten finish in the point standings for the first time in his career.
Short also rebounded well from the early crash, ultimately finishing 12th.
