Forty-one of the worlds fastest female motocross riders lined up this weekend in Teutschenthal, Germany for the fifth round of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship. In what appeared to be perfect conditions with light bouts of rain moistening the classic rock hard clay of ‘Talkessel’ Yamaha FontaMXracing’s Kiara Fontanesi put in two perfect performances for her third WMX round victory of the season.
When the gates dropped for race two earlier today it was a fresh faced Dutch girl Britt Van Der Werff who took the holeshot ahead of the usual culprit Nancy Van De Ven. Van Der Werff put in a solid couple of laps up front before coming under attack from the duo in the thick of the championship fight Yamaha MXFontaracing’s Kiara Fontanesi and Team One One Four’s Livia Lancelot, who both didn’t waste anytime in pushing past.
As you would expect, Fontanesi and Lancelot engaged in a heated battle for the lead. Lancelot threw everything she could at the defending champion but in the end it wasn’t enough. Fontanesi weathered the storm and banked a perfect 50 points this weekend. “I really wanted to win today” Fontanesi said, “I pushed really hard. I wasn’t smooth like I was yesterday but in the end I went 1 – 1 so that’s perfect!”
Lancelot was forced to be content with two seconds for second place, which was enough for the French star to retain the red plate. Meanwhile the local lady and former WMX hero Steffi Laier flew the flag high for Germany with a third place finish after working her way around Van De Ven late in the race. Van De Ven wrapped up fourth while Australian Madison Brown rounded out the top five.
Two fantastic races left the overall identical to the results of race two. Fontanesi stood top of the box with Lancelot and Laier rounding out the top three. With Fontanesi stealing six points from Lancelot here in Germany, the championship is sure to go down to the wire with only two points now separating them as they head into the final round.
