The presentation of the Grand Prix of Italy took place on Wednesday in Maggiora. Mr Giuseppe Fasola, the mayor of Maggiora, headed a press conference where he explained with great satisfaction the comeback of the region to the FIM Motocross World Championship scene. Mr Paolo Schneider and Mr Stefano Avandero, the two passionate young entrepreneurs who are ahead of the project, gave some details of how the preparations have been going and revealed some of the surprises the fans will be able enjoy during the 16th June weekend when they visit the renovated Mottaccio del Balmone track. Former FIM Motocross World Champion David Philippaerts, who lives a few kilomtres from Maggiora, was also present at the press conference. The last time the historical track of Maggiora hosted a Grand Prix was back in 1999 with the 125cc class, but what everybody remembers is the 40th edition of the FIM Motocross of Nations in 1986, when David Bailey, Rick Johnson and Johnny O’Mara claimed the Chamberlain Trophy representing the USA. Such emblematic track located in the north of Italy had been abandoned for 14 years, but thanks to the initiative of Mr Schneider and Mr Avandero Maggiora will be back in the calendar keeping its natural layout, but being renovated and adapted to the new era of motocross.
When Mr Schneider and Mr Avandero started the project of the reactivation of the natural amphitheatrum of 11000 square metres decided to turn the Mottaccio del Balmone track into the Maggiora Park, a multifunctional permanent facility dedicated not only to host Motocross events, but it would also let people practice other activities such as Cycling, MTB or Freeride. Such structure, which will be opened to the public for the first time during the 16th June weekend with the celebration of the Grand Prix of Italy, will count with a permanent restaurant and a swimming pool with priviledge views to the the Motocross Track. In a near future Mr Schneider and Mr Avandero would like to have different activities organized at the Maggiora Track throughout the year including several musical events.
