Well-known German lady Steffi Laier has returned to the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship this year proving that even after having a one-year beak she can still compete with the best. The four times FIM WMX World Champion and three times AMA WMX Champion is fighting for the position as runner up and we caught up with her to see how it is going.

Question: You didn’t compete in the FIM WMX World Championship last year. This year you are back, how does it feel and what did you do in the meantime?

Stephanie Laier #110: I am happy to be a part of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship again. It’s nice to see the older riders who have been competing for many years in the world championship as well as the new young talents. I personally feel that the WMX has changed a bit. This year I don’t have the pressure to be number one. For sure it would be nice to win, but I know that everybody has trained hard during the winter. I was not ready at the beginning of the championship as I only started training around March this year. Last year my season ended in August because I broke my left femur and I needed the rest of the year to recover. Before this happened I was riding the ONK Dutch open women’s championship, I won that and I also went to X-Games in the USA.

Q: Considering all that circumstances who do you consider now as your main rival in the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship?

Laier: Chiara is very fast and solid at the moment. I am still not riding like I used to ride, so right now my main rivals are Meghan Rutledge and Natalie Kane.

Q: What are your expectations for the end of the season?

Laier: At the moment I am in fourth place but only two points behind second, so it is definitely possible to move into the top three. For sure I would like to end in the top three because I feel that would be a nice coming back result for me and my sponsors.

Q: Which tracks are your favourite and why – what kind of rider are you?

Laier: I like more technical tracks with ruts or nice bumps in the corners. On flat tracks I don’t ride so well because everybody can give gas on the flat parts 😉

Q: What are you doing when you are not riding?

Laier: Almost every day I have something to do with motocross. When I’m not riding I take care of the other stuff as well as my bikes. When I don’t sit on the bike, I do fitness and when I don’t do one of both, I help out in a garage or do garden work.

Q: And finally, please leave a message for your fans and followers…

Laier: First of all thanks to all of you! Without your support I would have not reached my titles or be willing to fight to comeback.
I will always give my best and I will work hard to reach 100% again. Thank you for all the trust and for believing in me!
