Matthew Phillips arrived in Cahors France leading the Enduro GP by 15 points and leading in E2 by 18 points. Matthew could have struggled in this situation but the Australian is extremely combative and again demonstrated it in the high voltage atmosphere of the French GP!
Saturday was quite tense for the whole team as Matthew had to race in such a manner to ensure a balance between earning good points and not racing so hard as to crash and not finish. The last lap is unsustainable and found Matthew on the same second as Holcombe and Remes before the last special of the day, both riders were his opponents in the Enduro GP! Matthew chose to attack and he beat them both, finishing fourth in the Enduro GP.
On Sunday the equation was very simple, in order to win the title, Matthew had to finish twelfth in Enduro GP and seventh in E2. Matthew decided to attack at the end of the first two laps which put him in third place in scratch, this was enough of a cushion to allow him to relax in the last special. He finished fourth in Enduro GP, this finish allowed him to pass all of the rest of the candidates who were fighting for the titles!
It was with great emotion that Matthew arrived at the paddock in the center of Cahors, welcomed by the entire Azzalin and Sherco factory team to celebrate his E2 World Championship title! And the first title in their history in Enduro GP!!!
