Cory Buttrick Returns to GNCC

Ohio native and Beta Factory rider Cory Buttrick made a last minute decision to fill in for the injured Jesse Groemm for round 1 of the Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) series held in the sandy conditions in Palatka, Florida.

Buttrick got the call late Friday night from Beta team manager Zack Huberty asking him to fill in for Groemm in the XC2 class. Buttrick and his fiance Makenzie jumped in their van and headed south as the team prepared a special Beta 250 RR.

After a sixth place start, he began to push hard only to get stuck in a mud hole that pushed him back a few positions. Then at the end of lap one he was pitched off his Beta and found himself on the ground putting him back to 16th place. A solid charge after the crash pushed him up to 7th in the XC2 class for the day.

Buttrick’s teammate Justin Sode had a day he would rather forget. Also from Ohio, Sode spent the last couple months training down south to escape the frigid temps up North. The sand got the best of the young racer who eventually finished the XC2 class in 20th. Sode comments, “I got a decent start, then got tangled up with a rider loosing a few positions. I began to make up positions on my Beta 250 RR but half way through the race the Florida sand and heat got the best of me. My result is not what I wanted but I’ll be ready for round 2 in Georgia.”

Jesse Groemm continues to heal up from a concussion sustained while practicing for the National Enduro season opener. He is expected to return soon as he awaits his doctor’s release.

Round two of the GNCC series is this weekend held in Washington, Georgia.
