A big crash brought a premature end to the Grand Prix of France for home rider Xavier Boog. 24MX Honda’s Boog finished a fighting seventh in the first moto and retains 10th place in provisional MXGP standings. Replacement rider Jérémy Delincé experienced a complicated weekend but he still managed to collect five hard-earned GP points.
The St Jean venue, which had not seen a World Championship event since 2012, once again attracted a big crowd. Over the weekend around 32.000 fans came out to see the world’s best riders in action. Both Delincé and Boog started their weekend flying, posting the 6th and 7th time respectively in free practice. In the qualifying race Xavier had to settle for 14th after an issue with the front brake. Delincé guided his CRF450R to 20th.
In spite of a good initial jump from the gate Xavier found himself boxed in at the start. From mid-pack ‘#121’put in a determined effort to climb up to 9th. Boog produced a typical faster second half of the moto, posting lap times only one second from the fastest guys on the track. In the end he crossed the line seventh behind his fellow countryman Steven Frossard. The story of Delincé’s first moto was cut short by two early crashes and a painful shoulder. Two laps into the race the Swiss champion was forced to retire.
The second race started even worse for Boog who suffered a terrible getaway. However the double French champion was determined and blitzed through the field. Only 22nd after the first corner Xavier quickly remounted to 10th. Attacking Gonçalves at the bottom of a fast downhill Boog hit a square bump and was catapulted off the bike violently. While the first diagnosis at the track seemed rather positive, Xavier went to the local hospital at night for further examination and to assess the extend of his neck and back injuries. More news with an update about Boog’s injuries will be issued later this week.
Team mate Delincé put in a solid effort. The young Belgian was 20th after the opening lap but retaliated to claim 16th.
Steven Lettani, 24MX Honda Team owner: “Motocross is an awesome sport but it can also be a brutal one. On Saturday Xavier struggled a little bit. He was very ill last weekend in Matterly and he couldn’t ride during the week so that was definitely a disadvantage. On Sunday he turned things around brilliantly. Xavier fought hard in the first moto to take seventh. For sure it was one of his best rides of the season. Again he was on track for a strong result in the second moto, on his way to seventh in the championship standings when he took a big hit.We have to wait now for the doctors and the plan for recovery. At this point it’s hard to tell how serious the injury exactly is. We’re all behind Xav, his girlfriend Charlotte and his family. Getting him back healthy is obviously the first priority now.”
Jérémy Delincé: “I look back with mixed feelings. In time practice I dislocated my shoulder, although it was not so painful and no damage was done it was more difficult to hold on to the bike. We made some good steps with the setup of the suspension on Sunday morning. I was 15th in the first moto when I made a small error. A little bit later I had had another crash and went over the bars. In the second moto I consolidated, and didn’t take too many risks. My riding could have been better but 16th was okay.”
