Ryan Dungey Takes Glen Helen Overall with Last-Lap Pass for Moto 2 Win
Two motos in into the season for the 450 Class, and we already have two exciting last-lap finishes.
This race was controlled by the Red Bull KTM boys, Ken Roczen and Ryan Dungey, throughout the full 30 minutes plus two laps.
Roczen just barely edged out his teammate for the Motosport Holeshot and began to open up a lead. Dungey battled back though, and when Roczen got held up in lapped traffic with about seven minutes left on the countdown clock, Dungey started to close in. Over the next 10+ minutes, Dungey kept trying to get close enough to make a move, but began to fall back when they reached the two-laps-to-go mark. Dungey closed the gap once more and on the final lap of the race, he finally was within striking distance. With just a few turns left, Dungey finally got around Roczen – calling to mind Roczen’s attempted pass of Josh Grant for the lead in the first moto – and took the moto win and the overall win away from his teammate.
Trey Canard bounced back from his first-moto crash with James Stewart to take third in Moto 2. It’s a good thing he salvaged a few positions in that opening moto because his 7-3 results were enough to earn him third place overall on the day.
Aside from Dungey and Roczen, Brett Metcalfe was the only other rider to finish inside the top-five in both motos. Ryan Villopoto’s fill-in earned fourth overall with 4-5 finishes.
Moto 1 winner Josh Grant ran into trouble early in the Moto 2 and was imemdiately out of contention. He worked his way up to 15th place, earning himself a fifth-place overall result.
