Toni Bou in Japan, like at home

A win for Toni Bou in Motegi on the second day of the Japanese GP where the Repsol Honda Team rider took control early and dominated throughout the day. Team-mate Takahisa Fujinami, once again, finished on the podium on a day when he took his world championship trial tally to 300.

An overwhelming triumph for Toni Bou in the Japanese Grand Prix. The Repsol Honda Team champion shone on the second day in a performance, which in many ways, mirrored his success here last season.

Rain during the night forced race authorities to modify some of the sections making them more manageable. For this reason Toni Bou, feeling in better physical shape, was able to overcome any setbacks and weather the competition in his own inimitable style. By halfway point on the first lap Bou had already taken control, holding the first position which he then maintained throughout the rest of the three laps of the twelve section course, improving each time around. This is the second win this year for the Repsol Honda Team star who now has a five-point advantage over nearest rival Adam Raga in the general rankings.

Takahisa Fujinami celebrated a 300th world trial championship appearance with another podium finish. In a determined effort and one that differed from previous performances, the Japanese rider rode a precise and focused trial that saw him narrowly miss out on the second step of the rostrum. The Motegi circuit is something of a talisman for ‘Fujigas’: the Repsol Honda Team rider has obtained a total of 26 podium finishes there. Over the course of the 300 world championship trials, the veteran has accumulated 4103 points, with 295 finishes within the top 15 finishers and a total of 155 podiums (32 wins, 55 second places and 68 third places).

Basque rider Jaime Busto comes away from the trial unsatisfied after having hoped to make it onto the podium in Motegi. However, in spite of a brief spell where he notched up a lot of marks including four faults in four sections, the young rider has otherwise performed at the same high level as trial’s top guns.

The next trial in the FIM Trial World Championship will take place in Germany in a month’s time. On the 28th and 29th May, the town of Gefrees will play host to the third date of the season. The Repsol team will, however, first dispute the second round of the Spanish Championship in Sigüenza on May 15.

I’m really happy with this Japanese GP. It rained last night so they changed some of the sections around which made things a bit easier. Besides, I feel better physically; I realised that I usually improve on the second day, so I will have to bear that in mind, because I feel the pain less in the shoulder. Today’s victory has been an important one and judging by the way that things have gone over the last month, I’m over the moon to be five points clear at the top of the leaderboard.

I’m really pleased to be able to celebrate my 300th world championship GP with a third place finish. It is fantastic. Today’s third spot was totally different from yesterday, because I was battling all the way with Adam for second place. I felt really strong. Yesterday, I couldn’t get my head around it, but today ‘Fujigas’ was back. I’m happy about the way I did things. I’d also like to mention that I wouldn’t have been able to make it all this way alone without the spectators, the fans, the sponsors, the team and Honda. This success is important for me and I wish to thank each one of you.

Yesterday, I went to bed thinking that everything would go much better but I come away from here with completely the opposite sensation. Today I started really well but then I made two faults in two sections…. I didn’t have a very good day. I have to train harder and make fewer mistakes. Maybe it was because the sections had become easier and didn’t allow any margin of error. For next time… more of the same, but better.

The overall balance of the Japanese GP is a very positive one. Toni had a great race today; yesterday he suffered a lot more. It will be a difficult year but for now the good results are coming in. To be ahead after Japan is a reason to be happy. Fujinami got a great couple of results at home; the two podiums are a great satisfaction. Today, we even thought that it would be possible to finish in second place but Adam is Adam and he wouldn’t allow it. Jaime Busto made a few mistakes today that he ended up paying dearly for. It is just a question of experience. Once again, I would like thank all the team and especially the physio who has been taking care of Toni, who also did a great job. Now it’s time to set our sight on the next goal and we have the Spanish Championship ahead, where we will decide how we go about things. Toni will have some tests in Barcelona and then we will see.
