En route to his third victory of the season, Villopoto led all 20 laps at the Daytona Motor Speedway, marking his 37th-career 450SX Class win. Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen earned his sixth podium finish of the season with a second place and his teammate Ryan Dungey also earned his sixth podium of the season with a third place.
“Daytona is always a little special,” said Villopoto from the podium. “The track is always one of the most difficult we race on all year. Tonight the dirt was softer than it usually is which made for some big ruts and made it a little difficult.”
RCH Racing’s Broc Tickle finished a career-best fourth place in Daytona, just one week after posting a career-best fifth place in Indianapolis. Dean Wilson, who is filling in for the Discount Tire Racing/TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed, finished seventh in his second 450SX Class start. BTOsports.com KTM’s Andrew Short, who has been inside the top 10 at each race this season, scored his first top-five finish of the season with a fifth place.
Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett claimed his first Eastern Regional 250SX Class win of the season in Daytona, while his teammates Cianciarulo and Martin Davalos finished in second and third respectively. Cianciarulo and Davalos have been on the podium at every race this season.
“Tonight was a good race for me,” said Baggett in Daytona. “There is something about racing at Daytona that I really like. The track was difficult but I knew I had the speed to win tonight.”
Ford Field will once again serve as the host site of the Detroit stop for the fourth time. Supercross has raced in the Detroit area for 32 years, dating back to 1976 when Marty Smith earned the win. The first 29 years were hosted in nearby Pontiac, inside the legendary Silverdome.
